| Nací
el 13 de noviembre de 1959 en La Habana, Cuba. En
1960 mi familia tuvo que exiliarse por motivos políticos.
Unos amigos nos recibieron y hospedaron en España.
Fue una suerte, porque mis padres venían
sin pertenencias ni dinero: no se les permitió
sacar nada del país, salvo a mí. He
vivido toda mi vida en España, y soy español.
Residí en Madrid y Córdoba, donde
comencé mis estudios de medicina y psiquiatría.
En 1994, con el título de psiquiatra bajo
el brazo, empecé a enviar manuscritos a concursos
y editoriales. Mi primera novela se publicó
ese mismo año, tras haber ganado un accésit
en un premio. Decidí dejar la psiquiatría
(que apenas ejercí) y dedicarme a escribir.
El éxito internacional de La caverna de las
ideas, mi quinta novela larga, me permitió
saber que había tomado la decisión
correcta. |

was born on November 13th, 1959 in Havana, Cuba.
In 1960 my family went into exile for political
reasons and we were welcome and hosted by friends
in Spain. That was indeed very helpful and kind
of them, because my parents left Cuba with no
money or belongings whatsoever -nothing was to
be carried out of the island, officials said,
except myself. I have always lived in Spain and
I am a Spanish citizen. I lived in Madrid and
Cordoba, where I began my Medicine and Psychiatry
studies. In 1994, with a Bachelor's Degree on
Psychiatry flat on my desk, I started sending
manuscripts to publishers and literary competitions.
My first novel was published that same year, after
receiving an Honourable Mention at a competition.
That was when I had to take the important decision
of leaving Psychiatry aside (after having hardly
exercised it) and devoting myself to writing.
To me, the international success of La caverna
de las ideas (The Athenian Murders), my fifth
long novel, accounts for the appropriateness of
my decision.
